Plant-Powered Mindset: Overcoming Limits for Effective Weight Loss!

by Mike Thomas, NBHWC January 11, 2024

Hey there! If you’re somewhere between 30 and 90 and dreaming of becoming a healthier, more plant-powered version of yourself by shedding 15-40 pounds, you’re in the right spot. Today, let’s dive into the core of your journey – it is not just about food, but also the mental challenges. My aim here is to help you break through those thoughts that might be holding you back and show you how to start a plant-based weight loss journey feeling strong and empowered. A big part of making changes is the mental game we play with ourselves. So, how can we make sure we’re setting ourselves up to succeed? Let’s find out together!

“I’m too old to make a significant change in my lifestyle”

Colonel Sanders is widely known as the founder of Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC), Colonel Sanders didn’t achieve success until later in life. He started KFC at the age of 65 after facing multiple business failures. His fried chicken recipe, however, became a global sensation, making him a successful entrepreneur and an iconic figure in the fast-food industry. The irony of my using Colonel Sanders in this blog is not lost on me.  Lol.

Grandma Moses was a renowned American folk artist who began her painting career in her late 70s. Prior to her artistic pursuits, she worked as a farmer. Her charming, nostalgic paintings depicting rural life gained widespread popularity, and she became one of the most celebrated folk artists of the 20th century.

It’s natural to sometimes wonder if you’ve missed the chance to adopt a healthier lifestyle. Let’s shift this perspective! Age is just a number, and your body is an incredible, adaptable marvel. Making a significant positive change in your life is always within reach. I’ve had the privilege of coaching individuals in their 70s and witnessed firsthand that transformation occurs when you decide to make a change.

“I don’t have enough willpower to stick to healthy eating”

The significance of willpower is frequently overemphasized and misunderstood; it tends to be fleeting. As humans, we start with enthusiasm and robust motivation, but as time passes and life unfolds, our motivation may dwindle, leading us to question our capabilities. Rather than relying solely on willpower, let’s redirect our attention to nurturing habits. Establishing a supportive environment is vital for your journey. Beginning with small steps, making gradual changes, and implementing routines can not only make your transition into a healthier lifestyle manageable but also enjoyable. The conventional belief suggests that a lack of discipline or willpower hinders change. However, many of my clients showcase considerable motivation, discipline, and willpower in various aspects of their lives. As BJ Fogg, PhD. discusses in his book Tiny Habits, when guiding clients through life changes, motivation should be the last aspect considered. Instead, addressing elements like strong prompts, structure, routine, and ability opens opportunities for progress and subsequent positive results such as weight loss.

Three Strategies on Busting Through Limiting Beliefs

Celebrate Small Wins

Our evolutionary history has wired us to default to negative thinking, a survival trait from millions of years ago. However, this mindset often hinders self-reflection and personal growth. It’s beneficial to shift our focus to the positive aspects of life. In the grand symphony of your journey, every small victory, like choosing a salad over a less nutritious option, deserves recognition. These seemingly modest triumphs are the foundation of a healthier, happier you. Be intentional and celebrate them—they hold great value.

Positive Affirmations

As Dr. Shad Helmstetter’s states in his book What To Say When You Talk To Yourself, words have power, and positive affirmations are like magic spells for your mindset. Repeat after me: “I am capable of making healthy choices. I am on the path to my weight loss goals.” Incorporating these affirmations into your daily routine can transform the way you perceive yourself and your journey. It’s a mindset shift that sets the stage for lasting change. When the change begins to happen, this then reinforces more change. Success breeds success.

Mindful Reflection: Reframe the Setback!

Setbacks are not roadblocks; they are merely bumps on your journey. When they happen (and they will), embrace them with kindness and understanding. When I begin working with a new client, I let them know that setbacks in the change process are not only normal but actually expected. Together, we work to reflect on what led to the setback, learn from it, and adjust course accordingly. The mantra here is simple but powerful: “Always moving forward.”

Personal Note..

In August 2022, I took part in The 12-Hour Walk, an event initiated by world record holder and endurance athlete Colin O’Brady. Participants commit to 12 hours of continuous walking without technological distractions, promoting mental resilience and personal growth. Inspired by O’Brady’s transformative experiences detailed in his book on overcoming limiting beliefs, the event encourages self-reflection. Although challenging and occasionally painful, my recent repeat of the 12-hour walk last weekend showed personal growth, demonstrating the event’s focus on overcoming uncertainty and expanding my limits. Check out my video for a detailed account of the experience.
